THE STORY OF NEVONIM.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN:

Renowned for his kindness and authenticity, Rabbi Babad has always harbored a passion for supporting and encouraging those who need it most.

A life coach and CASAC-T, Rabbi Babad opened his first drop-in center 22 years ago in Brooklyn serving Chassidic youth, which became a safe haven for at-risk youth battling mental health and substance abuse.

Several years later, in 2010, Rabbi Babad opened his yeshiva, Anuvim, as a prevention program for struggling teens. On the heels of the Yeshiva’s success and at the request of many parents, he founded camp Anuvim in 2011, a successful summer program in Upstate New York.

In 2015, Rabbi Babad opened a second drop-in center, this time in Boro Park, called “Our Home.” Located at 1225 Street, it came to be known affectionately as “1225.”

Though Rabbi Babad had unfortunately lost students to suicide over the years, the painful death of 23-year-old Shmuly—a fun-loving, growth-oriented young man with friends, dreams, and a bright future—made him realize that something more needed to be done to help young people in distress.

In memory of Shmuly Fischman

Helping Shmuly’s friends through this agonizing experience, Rabbi Babad knew something had to change. Someone needed to fill the gaps that loving family, caring friends, and professional clinicians left behind. Rabbi Babad gathered a team, and Project Shmuly was born, expanding the drop-in center into a program where young adults could find safety, warmth, and belonging, as well as mental health resources.

Over the next three years, Rabbi Babad was approached with case after case of young adults in crisis. He recognized the need to help a broader population of those who need personalized support—someone to care for and guide them as they navigate life’s challenges.

He took his vast knowledge and 22 years of experience working with pained youth and developed Nevonim: a full-service organization that provides comprehensive care management, mentorship, friendship, and clinical referrals for those who are struggling and have nowhere else to turn.

Our mentors extend a lifeline of understanding and hope to those struggling through the tumultuous waves of trauma and recovery.
